The Hospitallers will support the center through its pool of volunteer naturopathic physicians throughout the world. Since the Health Center will operate under the auspices of the Hospitallers it will be on the international list of Hospitaller clinics and hospitals. Hospitaller Grand Dame Sherry Lund and the Victoria Lund Foundation have donated operational costs for the Health Center. The Order originated in 1048 in Jerusalem. In the eleventh century they established hospitals for pilgrims and offered protection for their journey. The Order is responsible for establishing hospitals and hospices across Europe, South America, the Philippines, and the Middle East. The Knights settled in Malta where they remained for 250 years, until Napoleon took the island. Russian Emperor Paul I then took the Order of Knights under his protection and became the Grand Master in 1799. Under Geneva Convention and International Humanitarian Law, the Cross of the Hospitallers is entitled to the same recognition by belligerents in war as the Red Cross. The Order maintains a marked degree of independence, and placed it amongst the first of the international organizations to be recognized by international law as an Ecclesiastical Order. The development and expansion of the Order has influenced the course of world history. Its hospitals made dramatic contributions to medicine and hygiene such as the procedures for quarantine, separation of patients into single beds, conduct and rules for nursing, and education for doctors. The current mission of the Knights Hospitaller is to establish, equip, staff and maintain humanitarian and medical treatment centers and hospitals. Current developing projects in North America, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Belize, Puerto Rico, Isle of Man, Hawaii, Israel, and Nepal. Our missions are primarily medical and promote the interests of health, safety and welfare. The Sovereign Medical Order of the Knights Hospitaller formally legislated into Ecuadorian Law in 2007 as an ecclesiastical order for the benefit of the poor and needy. The Order has obtained property in Santa Domingo, Ecuador for the construction of its Hospital.
